Ok, before even starting, I thank God for the community I grew up in. I don't write this to discount God working any where but to tell my story about how some of the stories I had heard were simply not as true as I thought. I had heard stories of 'money hungry' preachers, people who did not take the word seriously. Pentecostals in my mind apparently were more interested in being cool than being faithful.

Pentecostal Church near me
However, after years of feeling spiritually stagnant, a simple search for "Pentecostal church near me" led me to a vibrant, Spirit-filled community that reignited my faith. For me that community was Divergent Church in Canberra.
I found authentic relationships, a deeper experience of God’s presence, and a renewed purpose for my walk with Jesus. Here’s how it happened—and why you might consider doing the same.
For many years, I felt my faith journey lacked something essential.
I believed in God. I prayed when I needed to. I picked up the Bible occasionally to read it. I sensed that my faith was functioning automatically without real engagement. I wasn't growing. I wasn't thriving. I didn't know what I sought, but I felt convinced that more was out there.
After years of coasting I had actually dropped out of community, I sort of believed still but I was not moved. During a quiet Saturday night, I searched online for “Pentecostal church near me” on a spontaneous decision.
I entered the search with minimal expectations but held onto the hope that I might find something with the foundations I trusted but the vibrancy of God moving in a way that would move me beyond my own comfort zone. I have always people that God was supposed to be someone I walked with, a person to be experienced, not simply a goal of systematic theology. Don't miss hear me, I love good theology, however I always knew I am supposed to know God, not simply know about him.
The spontaneous search unexpectedly revolutionised my journey.
From Routine to Relationship
The next Sunday brought me to a Pentecostal church in Canberra City. In some ways I was surprised, how did I not know it? And to be honest, I was nervous. I didn’t know what to expect. Would people be over-the-top? Would it feel weird? Would I feel like I belonged?
Even the name made me a mix of curious and skeptical, what is with 'Divergent'. Divergent from what? I did soon read about 'Why Divergent' and it helped but I was still a tad skeptical.
As soon as I stepped inside the building, I felt completely comfortable. The sense of belonging I felt there was real—not because everything was flawless, but because everything was genuine.
The congregation exhibited deep passion during worship while the message delivered was Spirit-led and straightforward. Every person showed a sincere interest in connecting with me. I experienced recognition beyond just being another person in the crowd.
I felt a more intense presence of God than I had ever experienced before. The room buzzed with an energy which intrigued me enough to draw me closer. I don't mean it was a concert, Divergent is not that. It was genuine.
The Holy Spirit Makes All the Difference
A major turning point in my spiritual journey happened when I grasped the essential role played by the Holy Spirit.
In Acts 2, we see how the early church received the Holy Spirit, which enabled them to act with boldness and perform healing, prophecy, and speaking in tongues. I once believed those biblical accounts were confined to biblical times—until I saw how the Spirit is still active today. This dynamism is for all who believe (Acts 2:39)
I searched for a Pentecostal church in my area without knowing I was about to enter a transformed way of life. This approach positions the Holy Spirit as an active guide for everyday living, not just a theological idea. A comforter. A revealer of truth.
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”— John 14:26 (NIV)
In times of uncertainty, life finds courage and clarity through this source.
My decisions became clearer, my prayers more powerful, and I felt a deep desire to study God’s Word:
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”— 2 Timothy 3:16 (NIV)
I am still in the journey however, it is not simply about knowing more, but rather knowing him, it’s become intimate. Daily. Alive.
Community That Genuinely Cares
The people I met led to a total transformation in my life.
The experience at Divergent Church was not about the service, but the gathering, the community that lives in every day. It involves participating in life with people who sincerely want to share their journey with you. Our life communities include prayer sessions, reflecting on the word and lots of laughter while we openly discuss our personal challenges.
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”— Galatians 6:2 (NIV)
And that’s exactly what this community does. The sense of walking alone has disappeared from my life. My support network includes people who regularly check on me, uplift me, and lovingly challenge me when needed.
And honestly? This represents one of the greatest blessings I've received. Because spiritual growth doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens in community.
