How to Know Jesus: Simple Steps for a Lifelong Journey
Your curiosity about Jesus and His teachings shows that you share this quest with many others. No matter your spiritual background, learning about Jesus is one of the most profound and fulfilling journeys you can take. But where do you begin? This guide will show you how to know Jesus and why He is so important for your life today.
1. Ask Questions to Start Your Journey
The journey of faith often begins with a question. Even in the Bible, people came to Jesus with honest curiosity. For instance, a man once asked, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Luke 18:18, NIV). That’s a powerful question—and it’s okay to ask your own!
Questions like Who is Jesus? Why did He die? What does it mean for me? are a natural first step in how to know Jesus. Don’t feel like you have to have it all figured out—faith is about pursuing truth, not having all the answers.
2. Read the Bible: Start with the Gospels
If you want to learn how to know Jesus, the Bible is your best source. The four Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—are a great place to start. They tell the story of Jesus’ life, His teachings, His miracles, and His deep love for humanity.
For example, Jesus boldly declares in John 14:6 (NIV): “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” That’s a huge claim, and it’s worth exploring.
You don’t have to read the whole Bible in one go. Take it one story at a time. If you’re unsure where to start, try the Bible App or visit websites like Bible Gateway for helpful reading plans.
3. Pray and Ask God for Guidance
Learning how to know Jesus isn’t just about reading; it’s also about talking to God. That’s what prayer is—simple, honest conversation. You don’t need fancy words—just say what’s on your heart.
Ask God to help you understand Jesus better. As James 1:5 (NIV) encourages: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
Not sure how to pray? Try this: “God, please help me know who Jesus is.” It’s a prayer God loves to answer.
4. Find a Community to Learn With
Faith grows best in community. If you want to know Jesus more, it helps to have people around you who can encourage you, discuss questions, and walk the journey with you.

5. Be Patient with Yourself
Knowing Jesus is a journey, not a sprint. Even Jesus’ own disciples didn’t understand everything straight away! You’ll have moments of clarity and times of doubt—that’s completely normal. Stay curious, keep seeking, and trust that God is guiding you.
