How to Become a Christian: A Simple Journey of Faith
You may have spent time contemplating faith in your life. Maybe you're just curious. Whatever brought you here, you're probably wondering: How do I actually become a Christian? The path to becoming a Christian seems like a major decision (because it truly is!), but it's also beautifully simple. Let's explore several helpful steps that can guide you on this spiritual journey.
How to become a Christian
1. Ask Honest Questions About Faith
Christianity involves more than mindlessly following rules. It begins with genuine curiosity and questioning. If you're wondering about God, Jesus, the Bible or Christian beliefs, exploring those doubts is perfectly acceptable.
In fact, the Bible invites us to seek understanding: "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart" (Jeremiah 29:13, NIV).
Seek guidance from Christian friends, read parts of the Bible for yourself, and don’t be afraid to ask challenging questions. Christianity isn’t afraid of your doubts!
2. Connect with Church community
A key part of Christianity is community. Faith was intended to be a shared experience with others. Find a nearby church that feels authentic and welcoming. Don’t stress over having all the answers or feeling completely comfortable. Just attend a service and see what it’s like.
Hebrews 10:25 encourages us: "Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching" (NIV).
Look for a church that values both truth and grace. Many churches host newcomers’ events or casual gatherings where you can meet people in a relaxed atmosphere. We are naturally biased but if you are in Canberra, drop us a line at Divergent Church Canberra and come and connect. We would love to help you in your journey. If you are elsewhere, including Port Macquarie or Tallong, also drop us a line. Even if not, we would be happy to connect you with a local church near to you.
3. Join a Course Like Alpha
Not sure where to start? Courses like Alpha are excellent ways to begin.
These courses create a comfortable environment for people to ask questions, explore doubts, and discuss faith.
Jesus welcomed people to come and see for themselves: "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people" (Matthew 4:19, NIV).
Alpha courses run globally, both in person and online, and you don’t need any prior church experience to join. It’s a great way to explore Christianity in a no-pressure, non-judgemental setting. You can watch a quick promotional video for Alpha below.
4. Decide If You’re Ready to Follow Jesus
At some point, you might feel ready to make your own personal choice. Christianity requires more than intellectual agreement; it’s about trusting Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour.
The central confession of Christianity is beautifully summed up in Romans 10:9: "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved" (NIV).
Being a Christian isn’t about perfection or having your life completely sorted. It’s about turning to God, believing in Jesus, and receiving His forgiveness and new life.
You can express this decision through a simple prayer, asking Jesus to forgive you, be your Saviour, and guide your life.
5. Explore What It Means to Follow Jesus in Community
Following Jesus marks the start of an ongoing journey. Christianity is about a relationship with God and with His people. Keep showing up at church. Get involved. Join a small group or Bible study.
Acts 2:42 gives us a glimpse of the early church: "They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer" (NIV).
Faith grows best when shared. As you journey with others, you’ll discover encouragement, support, accountability, and joy.
Final Thoughts
Christianity isn’t about meeting certain standards or achieving moral perfection. It’s about grace: accepting what God has done for you through Jesus. Whether you’re full of questions or ready to pray, God loves you and sees you.
And remember, the invitation of Jesus still stands: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28, NIV).
Take your next step. You don’t need to have all the answers before you begin. You just have to start. If you are interested in starting this journey, message us below and one of our community will help you in your first steps.
