NEW TO CANBERRA

Moving to Canberra: A Local Guide to Life, Community & Church

Moving is often daunting—but it’s also full of opportunity.

We’ve had the privilege of walking alongside many people who’ve made the move to Canberra. Some arrive with clear plans. Others are figuring things out as they go. But almost all of them share the same quiet hope:

“I don’t just want to live here—I want to build a life here.”

That’s a good instinct.

Because Canberra isn’t just a city you pass through. It’s a place where, over time, something meaningful can take shape—friendships, rhythms, purpose, and for many, faith.

We genuinely love the Capital region—its people, its pace, and what we believe is part of God’s purpose here. And we believe you can come to love it too.

Canberra is a thoughtfully designed city, with access to parks, strong educational institutions, recreational opportunities, and well-developed community infrastructure. But beyond all of that, what really defines your experience here is the people you walk with.

Throughout the year, the city comes alive with community events, national festivals, and local gatherings. There’s always something happening—but the deeper question is whether you’re connected into something meaningful within it.

So below is a simple, honest guide—not just to surviving in Canberra, but to truly thriving.

CHURCH

If there’s one thing we’ve seen consistently, it’s this:

The people who thrive in Canberra are the people who find community early.

That’s why so many begin searching for churches in Canberra or looking for a Christian church in Canberra—not just for a service, but for connection.

At Divergent Church, our heart has never been simply to run gatherings, but to see people genuinely known, supported, and growing in faith and life.

If you’re exploring a Christian church in Canberra, you can learn more about our community through our Canberra church gatherings page, or explore options further out via our Queanbeyan church community page.

You can also connect with us more informally through our Divergent Church Facebook page.

We currently gather across four locations:

and soon

And once every four weeks, we come together as one church for what we call ONE SUNDAY, a powerful expression of unity across locations.

ACCOMMODATION

One of the first practical challenges people face is housing.

Canberra is a fairly transient city, which means accommodation can feel competitive and, at times, expensive compared to other regions.

But over time, most people find a place that works—not just financially, but relationally and geographically.

For those looking for a home or apartment, a great place to start is Allhomes Canberra property search, which allows you to filter by suburb, price, and property type.

If you’re looking for shared accommodation, there are additional options:

  • Faith-based housing networks like Christian accommodation listings in Australia

  • Community-driven options such as the Christian Accommodation Canberra Facebook group

We’ve seen many people find great living situations through relationships—sometimes even through connections formed in church.

SCHOOLS AND EDUCATION

For families, education is often a central concern—and rightly so.

The good news is that Canberra has one of the strongest education systems in Australia.

For younger students, families typically explore:

  • The ACT public school system through the Department of Education

  • The Catholic Education Office for Canberra and Goulburn schools

  • Independent and private options via the Association of Independent Schools ACT

For those coming for university or tertiary education, Canberra is home to some of the most respected institutions in the country.

But here’s something we’ve seen time and time again:

Education matters deeply.

But so does community.

That’s why, at Divergent Church, we’ve intentionally built spaces like our young adults community—where students don’t just attend uni, but find belonging.

GETTING AROUND

One of the pleasant surprises for many is how easy Canberra is to navigate.

The city’s design means traffic flows well, especially compared to larger Australian cities.

Public transport is reliable once understood. You can explore routes and services through Transport Canberra and city services, including detailed bus information via the ACTION bus network.

For regional and interstate travel, services like Murrays coach services and Greyhound Australia buses are widely used.

There are also extensive cycling and walking paths throughout the city, which many people come to enjoy.

GETTING CONNECTED

For those new to Australia, setting up mobile and internet services can feel confusing.

The main providers include:

  • Telstra mobile and internet plans

  • Optus network services

  • Vodafone Australia mobile options

Plans vary widely in value, so it’s worth asking someone local before committing.

GETTING FED

Food is one of Canberra’s quiet strengths.

While it may not have the reputation of larger cities, it offers an impressive range of options across cultures.

To explore restaurants, cafés, and local favourites, a helpful starting point is the Out in Canberra food and dining guide.

For groceries, major supermarket options include Woolworths, Coles, Aldi, and Costco.

Over time, you’ll find your regular places—and those rhythms will begin to feel like home.

GETTING OUT

Canberra might be quieter than some cities—but it’s far from empty.

There’s a richness here if you look for it.

You’ve got:

  • National galleries and museums

  • Parks and lakes

  • Access to the mountains and coast

  • Live music and cultural events

For a broader overview of what’s happening across the city, the Visit Canberra tourism and events site is a helpful starting

point.

PROFESSIONAL SPORTS AND CULTURE

Canberra has a strong and diverse sporting culture, with teams competing at the highest levels of Australian sport.

While based in Sydney, the GWS Giants play several home games in Canberra each year.

A Growing Sporting Culture

Beyond professional sport, Canberra has:

  • Local leagues (Rugby league, Rugby Union, AFL, football)

  • Running and fitness communities

  • Social sport competitions

Sport often becomes a natural way to build friendships and feel part of the city.

LOCAL LINKS AND COMMUNITY LIFE

As you settle in, a few key resources can help:

  • Government services through Access Canberra service centres

  • Public transport and travel planning via Transport Canberra services

  • Food and lifestyle ideas from the Out in Canberra guide

But beyond all of that, the most important connections are relational.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about knowing where things are.

It’s about knowing people.

MORE THAN A MOVE

At some point, moving to Canberra stops being about logistics.

It becomes about the life you’re building.

And more than anything else, that comes down to the people around you.
