DIVERGENT CHURCH
CANBERRA CITY

At Divergent Church Canberra City, we take a short half-time break during our gathering, a chance to grab a coffee, connect with others, pray, and simply be community together.
It’s one of the ways we try to make church feel less like an event and more like family.
Also central to who we are are our LIFE COMMUNITIES.
These are smaller, midweek spaces where real connection happens. Wherever people naturally gather is where we love to meet—cafés around Civic, workplaces, uni campuses like ANU, and homes across the city.
If you’re interested in getting connected, you can sign up at church, ask someone on the day, or reach out to us directly.
Team Leadership
Divergent Church Canberra City is led by two teams.
As a Church, we also wholeheartedly operate with a wider Leadership team that serves our gatherings and church as a whole. In each gathering is a specific leadership team that care for and lead that gathering.
Divergent Church Canberra City AM is led by Shaun Lee with the wider team.
Divergent Church Canberra City PM is led by Peter Chenery with the wider team.

Frequently Asked Questions – Divergent Church Canberra City
You can read more about Divergent Church including our history, mission, theology and leadership and governance structures at 'Understanding Divergent'. For some quick answers, check out below.
Why is it called Divergent Church?
The name Divergent Church reflects a central conviction about the teaching of Jesus and the nature of His Kingdom.
When Jesus stood before Pilate,
He said:
“My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.” John 18:36 (NIV)
Jesus taught that the Kingdom of God operates differently from the systems and values that shape much of our world. His Kingdom calls people to live in a way that may feel counter-cultural or divergent from the dominant patterns around us.
In the Kingdom of Jesus:
-
Faith overcomes fear
-
Life triumphs over death
-
Truth stands against falsehood
-
Love replaces hate
This is why we use the word divergent. It reflects the invitation of Jesus to live under the influence of a different Kingdom.
What is the mission of Divergent Church Canberra City?
The mission of Divergent Church is simple in wording but deep in meaning:
“All-In disciples devoted to His Kingdom.”
This vision is rooted in several of the great biblical calls given by Jesus and the early church — loving God fully, loving people deeply, and making disciples who live out the Kingdom of God in everyday life.
For us, church is not primarily a building or an event. It is a community of people learning to follow Jesus together and to live out His Kingdom in the places where we live, work, study, and serve.
Does Divergent Church Canberra City care about the local community?
Belconnen is a vibrant and diverse region of Canberra, filled with people from many different backgrounds and life stages.
From university students and young professionals to families and retirees, the region reflects the diversity of the city itself. Yet with that diversity can also come pressure to define life by success, status, or comfort.
The Bible invites a different way of living. The Apostle Paul wrote:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12:2 (NIV)
