Looking for a Church in Gungahlin?
If you’re searching for a church in Gungahlin, you’re not alone. Canberra’s northern region has grown rapidly over the past decade, and suburbs like Franklin, Harrison, Amaroo, Casey, Nicholls, and Moncrieff are now home to thousands of people from many different backgrounds and cultures. With that growth has come an increasing number of people asking deeper questions about faith, purpose, and community.

For many people, the first step in exploring those questions is finding a local church community.
Now, before we go any further, we should probably say something upfront: we’re a little biased. We love our church family at Divergent Church. It has shaped our lives, our friendships, and our faith in Jesus. Naturally,
we think it’s a wonderful place to
explore faith and grow spiritually.
But the truth is, the goal isn’t simply to get people into our church. The goal is that people would find a healthy Christian community where they can genuinely grow in their relationship with God. There are a number of churches across Canberra doing faithful work, and finding the right community for you can be an important step in your journey.
So if you’re looking for a church in Gungahlin, what should you actually look for?
1. A Church That Centres on Jesus
The most important question to ask about any church is simple: Is Jesus at the centre?
Christianity is not primarily about a building, a style of worship, or even a particular denomination. At its heart, it is about the person of Jesus Christ, who He is, what He taught, and what He accomplished through His life, death, and resurrection.
The Apostle Paul wrote:
“For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”— 1 Corinthians 3:11 (NIV)
A healthy church will continually point people back to Jesus — His grace, His authority, and His invitation to follow Him.
2. A Church That Teaches the Bible
Another important marker of a healthy church is a commitment to teaching and living out the Scriptures.
The Bible isn’t simply a historical document or a collection of inspirational sayings. For Christians, it is the primary way God speaks to His people and shapes the life of the church.
Paul reminded Timothy:
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”— 2 Timothy 3:16 (NIV)
In a healthy church, the Bible should shape:
teaching
leadership
decisions
community life
The goal isn’t simply to accumulate knowledge but to allow God’s Word to shape how we live.
3. A Church That Feels Like Family
One of the most beautiful aspects of Christian faith is that the church is described as a family.
The early church wasn’t just a weekly gathering. It was a community of people who shared life together, supporting one another, praying for one another, and walking through life side by side.
In the book of Acts we read:
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”— Acts 2:42 (NIV)
A healthy church isn’t simply an event you attend once a week. It becomes a community where relationships grow and people genuinely care for one another.
4. A Church That Encourages Spiritual Growth
A good church doesn’t just gather people; it helps them grow as disciples of Jesus.
Jesus’ final instruction to His followers was clear:
“Go and make disciples of all nations.”— Matthew 28:19 (NIV)
That means a healthy church will create space for people to grow in faith through things like:
prayer
learning Scripture
community relationships
serving others
living out faith in everyday life
The aim isn’t simply attendance — it’s transformation.
5. A Church That Loves Its Community
Jesus described His followers as people who would bring light and hope into the world around them.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.”— Matthew 5:14 (NIV)
Healthy churches don’t exist only for themselves. They care about the neighbourhoods and cities around them. They look for ways to serve their communities and reflect the love of Christ in practical ways.
For those living in the Gungahlin region, that might mean building relationships across suburbs like Franklin, Harrison, Amaroo, Casey, and Ngunnawal and being present in the everyday rhythms of local life.

Our Heart for Gungahlin
Divergent Church has a growing community of people living across the Gungahlin region, and our long-term hope is to see a strong and healthy church presence within Gungahlin itself.
Church communities grow best when they develop naturally, with strong relationships, leadership, and shared vision. Because of that, we believe it’s important to launch new gatherings in the right season and with a healthy foundation.
For now, many people from Gungahlin connect with the gathering at Radford College, but we continue to pray and prepare for what God may do in the future.
