Now, to be straight, Church is not just an event but a family of believers. As such, there are some quirks and things you may find a bit different but don't worry, you will be welcomed into a journey with a whole community that have been where you are right now. At Divergent Church here in Canberra and Queanbeyan, people are from all sorts of backgrounds, there is a place for all who want to take the journey of following Jesus.

Churches aim to create environments that are welcoming, hopeful, and foster genuine community. But stepping into a church for the first time can feel a little intimidating. Here’s what you need to know.

5 things to know when going to a Church service

1. Church is open to everyone.

God shows openness towards every person according to biblical teachings. Jesus said:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28, NIV).

There’s no need to have life all sorted or follow religious rules to feel welcome in church.

2. There’s no dress code.

Most churches welcome people just as they are, though some may have more formal traditions. Remember:

“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7, NIV).

Whether you wear jeans or a suit, you’re welcome.

3. You’re free to participate—or just observe.

A church service usually includes singing, prayers, a sermon, and possibly communion. Don’t stress—you can participate or simply observe. Everyone understands you might not know the flow or the words.

4. Church is a community, not a club.

“There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28, NIV).

Churches open their doors to people from every background and life story.

5. You don’t need to have all the answers.

Church is a place for people with questions and doubts. Even Jesus’ disciples wrestled with uncertainty:

“When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted” (Matthew 28:17, NIV).

You don’t need perfect faith to walk through the door.

5 Tips for First-Timers

Arrive a little early. This gives you time to find a seat, settle in, and maybe chat with someone before the service begins.

Don’t worry if you don’t know the songs or prayers. There will be words on the screens, feel free to join in—or simply listen.

Introduce yourself—but only if you’re comfortable. Many churches have a welcome team or a casual coffee time after the service. If you’re up for it, say hello.

Ask questions if you’re unsure about anything. People will be happy to explain what’s happening or answer any questions you have.

Come back a few times before deciding.

Every church has its own vibe. It’s normal to feel unfamiliar at first! Try attending a few times to see if it’s the right fit.

At its heart, church isn’t about rituals or rules—it’s about discovering God’s love and becoming part of a family. As the Bible encourages:

“Let us not give up meeting together… but encouraging one another” (Hebrews 10:25, NIV).

If you’ve been thinking about going to a Sunday church service, take that step! You’re invited. You’re welcome. You belong.
