Pentecostal Churches Canberra: From Scepticism to Spiritual Renewal

Before I begin, I want to say this clearly: God is at work in many churches, across many traditions. What I share here isn’t a criticism of others, it’s simply my story.
For years, I carried assumptions about Pentecostal churches. I had heard stories, about emotionalism, shallow teaching, or leaders chasing influence or money. In my mind, Pentecostal Christianity seemed more concerned with being relevant than being faithful.
But over time, I began to realise something uncomfortable: my assumptions weren’t based on lived experience.
Searching for a Pentecostal Church in Canberra
After a long season of spiritual stagnation, I found myself doing something simple—but surprisingly significant.
I typed into Google:
“Pentecostal church near me”
At that point, my faith felt passive. I believed in God, but I wasn’t growing. I would pray occasionally, read Scripture but mainly for theological argument less than a desire to know God. Unfortunately, there was little sense of movement, depth, or transformation.
It felt like my faith had become automatic rather than alive.
That search led me to Divergent Church Canberra
I also explored:
To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was pretty biased and assumed the areas where I already felt tension were because they probably did not take the word as serious as I thought I did.
What Is a Pentecostal Church?
If you’re exploring this, a helpful deeper explanation at "What is a Pentecostal Church?"
At its core, a Pentecostal church is a Christian church that emphasises:
The ongoing work of the Holy Spirit
The authority of Scripture (see https://www.divergentchurch.com/the-bible)
A personal, experiential relationship with God
Spiritual gifts for service
This emphasis comes from passages like Acts 2:
“All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit…” (Acts 2:4, NIV)
Pentecostal churches sit within historic Christianity, centred on Jesus. If you’re exploring that further check out "Who is Jesus?"
Christians differ on how spiritual gifts operate today, but Pentecostal churches believe these are still active.
My First Experience in a Canberra Pentecostal Church
Walking in, I felt a mix of curiosity and hesitation.
Would it be overwhelming? Would it feel forced? Would I belong?
What I encountered was something quite different.
There was warmth, genuine, not manufactured. There was worship, engaged, but not performative. At some point I had a longer discussion about what I perceived simply as style or emotion but alot of the ground is found in the article "Why we worship as we do"
There was teaching, clear, grounded in Scripture.
However more than anything, there was a sense of God’s presence I hadn’t experienced in a long time.
Not hype. Not spectacle. Just something real.
From Routine to Relationship
One of the biggest shifts for me was rediscovering the Holy Spirit, not as an idea, but as present and active.
This helped me understand more, I had a theology but I did start to experience more of what I had mentally assented to but really was less engaged with. "Who is the Holy Spirit" became a central question, not just on paper but in life.
Jesus says:
“The Holy Spirit… will teach you all things…” (John 14:26, NIV)
That began to feel real.
My prayers became more engaged. My decisions more grounded. My hunger for Scripture grew.
“All Scripture is God-breathed…” (2 Timothy 3:16, NIV)
Faith shifted from something I maintained to something I lived.
A Church Community That Actually Lives Together
Another defining difference was community.
Not just attendance but shared life.
To understand this practically:https://www.divergentchurch.com/life-communities
People prayed for each other. Checked in during the week. Shared honestly.
“Carry each other’s burdens…” (Galatians 6:2, NIV)
That verse became visible.

There are many faithful churches across Canberra. My time in Divergent was crucial for me, it challenged so many ideas I had, but the broader invitation is this:
Don’t settle for disengaged faith.
Explore. Visit. Ask questions.
Why This Matters
For me, this wasn’t about finding a better church.
It was about rediscovering a living faith.
