What Happens at Church? Visiting a Church in Gungahlin

If you’re wondering what happens at church or thinking about visiting a church in Gungahlin, you’re not alone.

Most people feel two things before they walk through the doors:

  • Curious

  • Unsure (sometimes even anxious)

Hey—Josh here.

Church in Gungahlin

My wife Ange and I have both stood where you are—about to walk into a church, not knowing what to expect.

And after years of visiting, leading, and welcoming people into church spaces, I can honestly say:

The fear of church is almost never equal to the reality of church.

So let me walk you through it—clearly, honestly, and without any pretence—so you

know exactly what to expect.

Before You Visit Church in Gungahlin…

You Don’t Need to Have It All Together

If you’re feeling nervous about visiting church, that’s completely normal.

But here’s something important:

You are not expected to have your life sorted before you walk into church.

In fact, the message of Christianity starts here:

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23, NIV)

That’s not about shame, it simply puts everyone on equal ground.

If you’re exploring faith and want to understand more, a great place to start is with this page and series "WHO IS JESUS"

What to Expect When Visiting a Church in Gungahlin

When You Arrive

When you arrive at a church in Gungahlin, here’s what usually happens:

Someone will likely say hello.

Not in an overwhelming way—just enough to help you feel oriented.

Most churches create space for you to:

  • Grab a coffee

  • Sit down

  • Observe and settle in

When Ange and I visit somewhere new, we often just take it all in first and that’s completely okay.

If you’re specifically looking for a local church, you can explore our church in Gungahlin.

And when it comes to what to wear—just come as you are.

What Happens at Church on a Sunday?

A typical church service runs for about 90 minutes.

Here’s what that usually looks like.

Music (Worship)

Most services begin with music.

Some people sing. Some reflect. Some just observe.

All of that is completely fine.

If you’ve ever wondered why churches sing, you can read more about this in why we worship as we do.

Prayer

Throughout the service, there will be moments of prayer.

You’re not expected to pray out loud.

You can simply listen and observe.

Teaching (The Message)

This is the main part of the service.

Someone will unpack a passage from the Bible and connect it to everyday life.

If you’re unsure whether the Bible is relevant or trustworthy, this article "Can you trust the Bible" is a helpful place to start.

What Happens After Church?

After the service, people usually spend time connecting.

Some stay and chat. Others have to head off.

Both are completely normal.

If you’re looking for deeper community, many churches (including ours) have smaller groups during the week. You can explore our life communities here:

What You’re NOT Expected to Do at Church

Let’s remove some pressure.

When visiting a church in Gungahlin:

  • You don’t need to know the Bible

  • You don’t need to sing or pray out loud

  • You don’t need to give money

  • You don’t need to agree with everything

If you’ve had a difficult past church experience, you’re not alone. You might find this helpful: Should I return to Church?

Why Do People Go to Church?

Church is more than a weekly event.

People come because they are:

  • Searching for meaning

  • Looking for community

  • Exploring faith

  • Wanting to know Jesus

If you’re curious about what that actually looks like, you can explore what it means to follow Jesus.

A Personal Note from Me

Ange and I care deeply about creating a church where people don’t feel like outsiders. This is has always been true for our kids as well. We did not simply want programs but rather a community they could find home in and friends they could grow in their faith with.

Because we’ve both experienced what it’s like to walk into a place and feel unsure.

That’s part of why we started Divergent Church in Canberra.

Final Thought

You don’t need certainty to walk into a church.

You don’t need confidence either.

You just need to take a step.

And often, that step is where something meaningful begins.
